First artificial turf pitch in top 14 rugby for US Oyonnax

US Oyonnax to install first artificial pitch in Top 14 Rugby

The Charles-Mathon stadium will install FieldTurf’s elite rugby system Vertex.

The home stadium of the French Top 14 rugby club US Oyonnax will install a synthetic pitch, the first for a French professional club of this level in the country. FieldTurf once again has proved the artificial turf innovator, taking the lead in French professional rugby which anticipates the arrival of more artificial pitches in the coming years. In the UK, some major professional rugby teams such as Cardiff Blues have already achieved stunning results by switching to synthetic surfaces. The Cardiff Blues having even hosted the final of the Amlin Cup since the installation of their FieldTurf Vertex 65 system in 2013.

US Oyonnax becomes a forerunner in the artificial pitches among the French Top 14 (first division) rugby teams by choosing the FieldTurf Vertex synthetic turf system. This system provides the utmost performance and playability characteristics, containing a combination of fibres produced from unique polymers designed for sports surfaces. The combination results in a surface that has reduced skin friction, reduced skin abrasions, improved resilience and decreased rubber splash. The artificial turf has passed the strictest tests by World Rugby and is created to provide the maximum safety and comfort of the players. The special coloured infill system is designed to ensure the good playing characteristics of the field whilst maintaining a natural look.

The new pitch will be ready for the late summer months, but the main benefits will be seen during the adverse weather conditions that the Oyonnax region can experience in the winter months. The natural pitch being removed was unable to perform all year round, so it is now up to FieldTurf to deliver the optimal playing conditions for top level rugby. For US Oyonnax, the long-term performance was a crucial element in the choice of a new pitch, but also considered was the capacity of FieldTurf to reduce the stadium’s expenses twelve-fold over 10 years as compared to the natural grass maintenance costs.

The Charles-Mathon stadium will be the US Oyonnax’s home pitch, welcoming the important matches of the Top 14 and Champions Cup, but will also be the home of community school’s teams.
